Or win the lottery. Either way, Minoru was feeling both quite broke and very accomplished at the same time - a strange sensation for sure, but when it came down to it, he was pretty satisfied with everything. For weeks, he had been sneaking into the Crown Game Center after hours, tinkering with one of the Sailor V game machines, installing new hardware and gadgets inside it, all cunningly hidden. It hadn't been an easy task. He had borrowed several computer books from the local library, did a lot of reading, and bought a lot of gadgets and things. Understandably, not one of the books covered how to convert an arcade game into a usable computer and Minoru wasn't exactly Bill Gates, but he had managed to modify the game machine into something of a super computer. It had taken several tries, break-downs (the arcade owner was mystified as to why that particular machine broke so many times), and frustrated tantrums on Minoru's part but it had finally gotten done. The computer was now capable of connecting to satellite imagery, communicating with cell phones or other computers, storing vast quantities of information (which Minoru promptly took advantage of, inputting all the data he and Addie had gathered over the last few years), as well as having a nifty GPS installed. Oh yeah, and it still played the (in Minoru's humble opinion) the best video game to hit arcades in the last ten years. So, Minoru was feeling quite proud of himself and gave his back a congratulatory patting as he sat and did the final tweakings and testings. The screen's glow illuminated his handsome face and masked his tired, reddened eyes and the dark circles beneath them. His coat was thrown lazily over the seat next to him, as he was quite comfortable in his long-sleeved black shirt and straight-leg jeans. His fingers flew over the buttons but occasionally seemed more haphazard than purposeful. Minoru longed for a cup of strong coffee but he refused to bring food or drinks near his electronic masterpiece. He glanced at his watch - 12:18 a.m. - and then rubbed his eyes, resisting the urge to close them for just a few minutes. All of a sudden, there was a noise outside. Minoru's eyes flew open, his fingers quickly hitting the power switch on the game machine. The arcade was plunged into darkness, and a white cat slinked underneath stools and machines, settling cautiously behind the staff counter.![/style] |
