Biology is a particular favorite, but science as a whole is interesting; because he works at a pharmaceutical lab, he also has a particularly strong love of chemistry and the reactions that different chemicals have to one another. He fancies himself an alchemist at core (and his actual job relates to this, as the laboratory he works at as a researcher is directly responsible for the creation of prescription drugs used to treat infectious diseases). DISLIKES: ೄ Liars; Call it naïve, but anyone who lies a lot is probably someone who is trying to do something they ought not to be doing. Insofar as his experience has taught him, people who go out of their way to lie and hide their motives are people who are probably not in any way out to help anyone but themselves. Similarly, he’s not terribly fond of people who are overly cautious in their behavior or actions for the same reason: if you’re that careful about hiding what you’re up to, odds are, it’s something that others should be leery of. STRENGTHS: ೄ Intelligent; Ran is actually a fairly smart person. While he would not be described as a genius, he is someone who is good at putting forth effort to learn things, and he does tend to pick up new abilities relatively quickly. Sure, he’s not a “natural” at anything other than most forms of science (at heart, he’ll always be a chemist, actually), but he’s still smart enough to figure out problems and their solutions if given time. His intelligence, though, is most often portrayed in how he communicates; he’s often very formally polite and distant; some might go so far as to describe him as cold, even. That’s not really his goal, but he does tend to focus more on proper manners when talking to people. WEAKNESSES: ೄ Judgmental; As stated under his secretive strength, Ran is an extremely judgmental individual. He tends to remember everything and while he’s fair, he does not make many allowances for what he terms inappropriate behavior. Translation: he doesn’t suffer fools well. Two strikes, you’re out with him – there is no third chance. Some people would be more forgiving due to external circumstances – “She’s going through a hard time right now, so it’s expected that she’s snappy.” – but Ran isn’t one of those people. He also judges people based on how they treat others, not just him. He’s the stand around and observe then pass judgment type – and since he’s observant, he’s likely to form an ill opinion of someone long before he actually talks to them. ANYTHING ELSE WE NEED TO KNOW: Ran always wears a single earring that appears to be made of black diamonds; it’s cut into a long, thin, dangling gemstone and is edged in silver. In his own time, he usually forgoes this earring (despite having been the one to design it and others like it), but in the present, it is a reminder of home. PERSONALITY: To those who first meet him, Ran is likely to appear as a quiet, polite, distant and mysterious man; he doesn’t talk about himself much and will gracefully dodge any questions pointed to him by changing the topic. His manner of speech is rather formal, giving the impression of being sophisticated and well-educated, and there is no denying that he is intelligent just from the way he communicates. He tends to come across as withdrawn, but few would mistake him for shy. He is far more likely to come across as arrogant, for he is anything but timid; he meets people’s gazes when he talks, has absolutely no problem answering questions (so long as they aren’t about him) and will approach people first if he needs to. Soft-spoken, yes, but never lacking in confidence. He knows his own worth, and having a naturally low opinion of people from Earth makes it easier to deal with the people around him. If he already knows they’re inferior to him, what’s it to him if they think him odd? Still, despite the superiority complex, he is polite. Once you get past the surface, Ran’s actual personality becomes apparent. While he’s stubborn and somewhat rebellious, he’s actually a very loyal person – especially to his family (with his brother as special emphasis). He will risk almost anything to keep the people he cares about safe and happy, and he will even go against what he knows is right if that’s what it takes. Unlike many of his cousins, he does have a firm grasp of right and wrong, but the lines become blurred at times – particularly when it comes to science. Knowing something is wrong and doing something about it are two very different things, and it takes something that challenges his sense of loyalty to drive him to action. Ran is a scientist-type at heart and when left to his own devices, he has a very bad habit of treating everyone and everything like lab subjects – at least, in his mind. Sure, he’ll be polite about it, but he does tend to mentally jot down notes on the behavior of everyone around him to figure out how they work. Kind of like taking apart a puzzle. Because he grew up on a planet with almost no flowers or natural life to speak of, there’s a strong part of Ran that actually likes Earth. Not so much the people, but the planet itself. This manifests most often as him spending his time out in gardens a lot – a stark contrast from the fact that he’s so technically inclined (and he is – any new technology is a ‘must have’ for him, even if it is past-dated for someone from the 30th century). He is extremely bitter toward Crystal Tokyo of his time as well – which is largely why he won’t talk about himself; anyone who talks to him might be able to pick up on the fact that he really, really doesn’t like where he comes from. Or being punished for crimes he never committed – that happened before he was ever born. How is that fair…? HISTORY: Ran Hayashi’s life began on a planet far, far away. It was a planet of darkness, of cold; a place of shadows where few flowers grew; a place erratic and hard to track by any modern technology; a place that should never have been anyone’s home. The planet was called Nemesis. Those who lived there did not originate from its shadowy depths; their origins came from Earth – from criminals and traitors who stood against Neo Queen Serenity’s rule and were banished to the dark. They were not the first; they would be the last, however. Years passed. The population expanded. Generations moved on and leaders rose to the top. Nemesis had a King and a Queen in its own right, and the royal family grew. They took their names from gemstones to match the crystal planet on which they lived; which they came to call home. He was born Saphir, the younger of a pair of brothers and a prince of Nemesis, second in line to Dimande – his older brother and friend. He did not have a particularly happy childhood, but unhappy was not the right word for it, either. He grew up resentful of Crystal Tokyo, as his older brother did; it was, perhaps, his brother’s resentment that influenced his belief that Neo-Queen Serenity’s presence alongside her Silver Crystal (so sought by many forces throughout the universe) caused unnecessary strife and turmoil in the world. It was an opinion that many shared, but few gave voice. His brother’s opinion that the unnaturally long lifespans of those in Crystal Tokyo was one of the few given voice – and it attracted a mysterious figure, a figure that came to be called Wiseman. Guided by Wiseman, led by Dimande, and with the thought of vengeance in their hearts, Nemesis and its inhabitants began to prepare for an attack. The planet itself emitted a natural aura of energy that could be used for their purposes, if refined. The actual process took a great deal of work and effort on the part of many, but it was actually Saphir who figured out how to create droids – robots that resembled sand figurines that could only screech to communicate; they were made using the Black Crystal’s energy. The problem was that they were not functional. His initial creations were imperfect; failures. They did not last very long. He needed something that could withstand fighting; that would be able to hold its own against humans if they were to be used in the coming onslaught. History teaches us to learn from our predecessors and their mistakes. Remembering a time long, long before he was born, which he read about in books and with suggestions from Wiseman, Saphir decided to learn about others – others who had nearly succeeded at conquering the Earth. Youma, they were called; the servants of Queen Beryl and those under her command. While far from perfect, they had what he needed: survivability. But how to learn more about them when they were all extinct? There was only one solution – to go back. Back to Tokyo, when Queen Beryl first attacked. ‘Saphir’ was not an acceptable name there, though; he assumed the role of a young research assistant by the name of Ran Hayashi, working in a pharmaceutical laboratory. It wasn’t a total lie. He was researching. Medicine just wasn’t on the agenda – youma were. NAME/ALIAS: Jayme FACE CLAIM: Kamenashi Kazuya YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: Uhhh, 12 years? I think?
