PERSONALITY: Jericho, or Jeri, as he is primarily called, is not so much a bundle of contradictions as he is just a bundle of stuff, very rarely showing the privileged English brat that many of his counterparts became on being some of the few wealthy white children in India. He has no want for that, no need. The only times he is particularly demanding tend to be emergencies, or if he has asked someone to do something specific for him and it is not done. It's one thing to not listen to him when he is being lazy, as college students are, and refuses to get up and get a glass of water. It's a whole other thing to ignore his request to get bandages for a bleeding child. Because of the varieties of life he has seen, from the wealthy Brahmin to the dirt-poor Untouchables, Jeri can be bitingly sarcastic. Not sarcastic to wound, but sarcastic to prove a point when someone who has food to eat and decent clothing complains about being starving or wearing rags. He has seen the literally starving, with barely any clothes. It is not for you to call yourself that, even if it is just a figure of speech. He is driven and determined to become a Mechanical Engineer, not only so that he can help his father's companies grow and prosper and give more jobs to the population of India, but to see if he can help out Niranjan and the other children and young adults he knows of that are in wheelchairs. The typical wheelchair cannot stand the living conditions some of these people are in, and he wants to make ones that can, beyond the PVC beach wheelchairs that many of them ride around in, because those chairs, while cheap, do not provide the level of support some of these children need. He is compassionate and caring to all around him, as often as he may be, eagerly absorbing all he can about different religious backgrounds, having been raised Protestant in the middle of India - he is as likely to pray to Jesus as he is to Ganesh, sure that either way his prayers will get there. The way of request doesn't matter, he believes, so long as the request is made and the person does their hardest to keep their end of the bargain or make things work out for themselves. Yes, he is possessive, but not of his material goods beyond a few items. He is possessive of his friends and family, determined to do nothing to make them turn from him, determined to accept them no matter what they do so he doesn't feel the need to turn from them. His anger, when he gets angry is no pretty thing, he goes directly for the jugular like a tiger and rips out the person's metaphoric throat. It takes some work to get him to this state, but those who do had best beware. He trained in Krav Maga in an attempt to harness his temper, and it succeeded, few are black belts at age twenty-one. Relentlessly stubborn, the two things that still can get him down are his diabetes (controlled by insulin injections and watching what he eats) and his inability to eat fish. He can have shellfish fine, crab, lobster, even non-shellfish like squid he can eat and be fine, but turns red and itchy upon even the word salmon and tuna: don't ever talk to him about caviar. If it has a tail and multiple fins, chances are he can't eat it, a real pity when in Japan, with all the sushi. Even then he's been known to sneak a little bit of honey in his second mug of chai, or munch on a chocolate chip cookie. It's all in moderation, he knows, as he knows his limits. There are a few items he is never without - a small beltknife, just out of habit, it can be used for anything, jar opening, string cutting, fighting off stupid yakuza, you name it, it's done it. His ivory pendant is another: the elephant that had the ivory was not poached, but rather rescued from poachers; unfortunately it died the next day. In an effort to show goodwill, the ivory was carved, and a small tiger pendant was given to him. He has always enjoyed the two classicly Indian animals, the tiger and the elephant. He's not a fan of peacocks, since they like to wake at dawn and produce quite the racket. Niranjan taught him the sitar when younger, and in return Jeri taught his Indian friend the guitar, as taught to him by his father. The two instruments are fairly similar, but all things considered, not particularly so, just in terms of having a neck, body and string. Jeri is as likely to be elbow-deep in a car engine as he is playing with a guitar, at least before he went to Japan. He enjoyed the few times their father took the family sailing, and he can never forget that memory of the sea surrounding him - of feeling so small, and knowing that a small being can do large things. THE PAST HISTORY: Elizabeth Spaulding was married with great pomp and circumstance to Gregory Connors. She was the last of the Kent Spaulings, wealthy for their work in medical equipment. Gregory Connors was a self-made London businessman, dabbling in everything from computers to medical supplies to stocks and bonds. Elizabeth was much more than a sit-at-home housewife, she was a doctor in her own right, a well respected OB-GYN. That was how they ended up in New Delhi. The newlyweds honeymooned to India, Elizabeth having finally decided to do a six month stint of Doctors Without Borders, and her new husband more than willing to come along for the adventure - and the chance at furthering his international business dealings. They simply never left. They were not the first English couple to fall into the lure of the once "Crown Jewel of the Empire". But they were one of the better ones. Yes, Gregory opened factories and had people working in them, but they were all given a living wage and extremely safe living conditions. The turnover of employees was high, but not because they wanted to stop working - because he offered incentives for them to go and finish their schooling and then sent the best of them to be his international contacts, provided they were willing to leave their country. There was a waitlist of workers for even the most menial position, for all knew that they would get one or two decent meals, good clothing to work in, and insurance. All they had to do was do their jobs. Elizabeth worked as a private practice OB-GYN, taking on as many charity cases as she could and assisting with outreach in regards to infanticide and AIDS prevention and child marriage. This didn't even stop when she herself became pregnant. She gave birth to a ten pound baby boy and they named him Isaac Trent after Gregory's father. Technically he is Isaac Trent Connors the Third, but because his grandfather, Isaac Trent Connors Jr. refused to do that to his son, the young Isaac technically is not. It's a bit confusing, but none of them particularly care, he's just Trent. Jericho was born when Trent was two, a healthy baby boy of eleven pounds, beating his older brother. They're fairly similar, sharing their father's warm brown eyes and their mother's dark blond hair. Jericho was gifted with his other grandfather's full name - Jericho Spaulding, which kept the otherwise lost last name in the family, as Gregory and Elizabeth had decided at marriage that Spaulding-Connors or Connors-Spaulding or giving the children just Spaulding as a last name would be too much. Two years after Jeri, as he was called, was born, little Brittany Rose was born, taking the traits her brothers hadn't, her mother's gray eyes and her father's darkly curling hair. All three of the children rapidly grew a permanent tan thanks to the hot Indian sun, freckling through their tans, rather than being traditionally pale English children. They all preferred being dark like that. They were a rambuncious trio, requiring supervision by nannies while their mother and father were out working , not because they deliberately set out to get into trouble, but trouble seemed to find them. By the time that Jericho entered kindergarten he'd already broken both his arms and dislocated his shoulder. Admittedly, one of those times involved protecting toddling Brittany from falling down the stairs, as even at four he was just as protective of his younger sister as his six year old brother was. Jeri idolized Isaac, and Isaac gave him no reason not to. As siblings do, they would squabble and fight, but they all loved each other. Gregory and Elizabeth were busy, but always took time out to be with their children and teach them, not just the typical manners and tying shoes, but how to be a proper family, how to be good people, to care for others, to donate the excess that one does not need, to embrace everyone no matter how they look. The children would accompany Elizabeth on her trips down to the Untouchables' living areas as she checked on the pregnant mothers and they would play with the children, teaching them how to count and the other basic things they were learning in school that these poor ones might not be able to ever learn. Jeri's best friend growing up was a wheelchair-bound boy. A native of India, Niranjan was Isaac's age, but in Jericho's class due to his physical disability having affected his absences over the past two years, making him ineligible to move to the next level because of the material learned. Jeri helped him learn the things he just didn't quite get in exchange for lessons in Punjab. The family already had a tutor teaching them Hindi, since the school they were at was taught in English. Niranjan only helped Jeri more as the two moved up in years, helping Jeri to figure out the culture he was submursed in in a way that he would not have been able to without his friend. Isaac and Brittany were turning out just fine, but for Jeri - for Jeri, there was never any want to stay in England when they visited. The heat and the everything about India called to him like it was in his soul. By the time he was thirteen Jeri had a nickname in the poor neighborhoods where he and his family helped out, "Janardan", which means "one who helps people" for his tireless work not only in helping with food and the other necessities his more than wealthy parents gifted out, but for showing the little ones how to fight off bullies, for helping them to stand up for themselves. "One who combats evil" is another translation of Janardan, and it can easily be said that it fits, even to this day. He became quite the little tinker as he grew, watching as the workers fixed their rattle-trap cars and eventually becoming involved in helping. His interest in mechanics only grew from there, eventually netting him a job at a local auto shop during school breaks, with all the money he made going towards charities, as his parents pulled in more than enough income for him to live with any creature comfort he desired. He knew since he was fourteen that he wanted to be a mechanic, and the University of New Delhi offers a five year BE/ME program, which would enable him to get his bachelors and masters in Mechanical Engineering in five years' time. It is his fourth year and he decided on a whim to go abroad, further east. He wanted to see more of the world than he had already seen, and with Isaac more than happy to take over the family company, he didn’t have to worry about disappointing anyone, as Gregory and Elizabeth were as pleased as could be with him, merely wishing him luck as he traveled for his year in Japan, clutching at his dictionaries.
